Kibler Southern Mountain Rifle Build: Day 1
The design of this kit is somewhat based on the historic work of Joseph Whitson from Western North Carolina.
I’ve never built a rifle, let alone from a kit. I’m not necessarily one to attempt such an undertaking as the idea of destroying a grand worth of parts causes me pause. The Jim Kibler kit here (a birthday gift from my wife) sat for over a year and a half as I waited for the right time and gumption to attempt it. Luckily or better said, blessed I was to have a good friend from the Muzzleloader group take me under his wing to give me the necessary instruction on various techniques, cautions and methods, true wisdom on the fitting and putting together of a flintlock. He’s a true gunsmith, who typically shapes the most beautiful rifles from raw timber, barrels and parts - all by hand. He applauded the Kibler kits, the ease of assembly, and boy the little guide jig for the drill. The perfection of these kits is remarkable and there is no competition I believe. If there’s anything close to this in historic accuracy, precision detail, fit, and quality, do share. The process was captured as much as possible on video, if anything for my benefit and those close to me so as to follow it again in building more kits from Jim Kibler Longrifles.
Enjoy these shots of the other days work and thanks for being a part of Folk Firearms Collective channel. Keep these traditions and history alive.@kiblerjim #flintlock #muzzleloader
We tremendously appreciate all of your support over the years. The Folk Firearms Collective is a husband and wife team comprised of Denny Ducet and Alina Aldobrando. Our goal is to preserve the passion, art, culture and traditions of the blackpowder community and the adventurous history behind it. Should we fail to immerse ourselves and educate each other in this rich history, posterity will wither and cease, leaving the younger generations to never experience the joy of such times. Join us as we disconnect from all the modern noise and chaos.

We humbly thank the Flathead Valley Muzzleloaders Club for their dedication to this craft, the land on which we shoot, and most importantly-their willingness to partake in this preservation of history. Of all the folks we’ve been honored to spend time with, these gents and gals are the greatest of our friends. We are forever grateful for their influence and education in our own lives through the course of our traditional muzzleloading journey.

The man assisting me is renowned longrifle maker. I have a custom hand made Jacob Dickert and it’s the similar blade, same install. Find me a southern mountain rifle different. Every blade I’ve seen is this way.

Winter Muzzleloader & Flintlock Black Powder Shooting In Montana
Way to soft-handed with that file I would probably braise it in now that you have gaps
Knights in white satin by the moody blues
Such magnificent beards!
Hand cutting a dove tail? Very nice
Am I the only one who would pull out of a micrometer and measure both sides?
Center does not mean sighted in. After load development and accuracy determined on paper at 25 and 50 yds, I’ll drift the sights to exactly where they need to be. After that perhaps file smooth the edges.
Why is it called Kibler ?
Kibler long rifles is a company currently run by Jim Kibler. They make these kits. Check them out.
I have my Great Grandfather's Ranger single shot .22 that the sight got knocked off and he repaired by using a hammered copper penny for the new sight. That old penny sight is still accurate and he did there repair before at least 1963 because that was the year he died. I never met him as he died before i was born. He was pretty handy with his hands as he made a living working with them.
Amazing story. Thank you for sharing.
Love the background songs I know it but everyone beat me to the punch
Btw, you can teach a woman to hunt a lot faster than you can a dog, and a dog can't clean the carcass and cook the animal while using its thumbs to help build shelter and a fire...
Nights in white satin, zeds dead remix. Great song.
Well if that ain’t a sight to see. 👍
Прородитель второй поправки
Последний из Могикан !
Zeds Dead baby :)
Sweet.😂😂 one of these days I'd live to have me a real Kentucky rifle. Looks like I whole Lotta fun.
Ahh. Nights in white satin
Deer see blue
Sir. It's backwards. Jk. Good job.
Forgot about that song. Thanks
Wouldn't you peen it also?
Why not file the sight opposed to the barrel.
Sight was cleaned up this is only about 2 strokes to slightly open the one entry side to make a tight fit.
💪💪
I’ve got a .45 cal one in cherry that Jim built in the white. Can’t believe how light it is.
Nights in white satin. Perfect
I have a version of that same smoothbore in clear Beech that was built by Mike Brooks. I love mine but i love that blie color too! Nice to see the smoke. 🎉
I love a Type G!
Hold your Powder dry....greatings from Germany.
Will shooting a flintlock make you a better person? Ans: You bet your bippie, yes it will!
Indeed
Nothing beats the sound of flintlock!
If anything, it teaches you patience and trigger control.
This was awesome to watch.
Thank you. There’s more fun shoot videos here on the channel.
The red coats are coming 🔔 🐎
Art at work
Now to the range on a still day.
Looks like it's backwards
Read description. It’s not. 100% correct
This is where I want to be.
I would learn how to build these old muzzle loaders from scratch one day
Please do. We need more who carry the torch on. Few remain who have that skillset.
If you single point hold the file and guide with the opposite hand, you’ll get straight accurate dovetails without the hourglass effect. This will give you a seamless transition between your front sight post and the parent metal of the barrel. Two points of contact causes you to rock the file and leaves those gaps you can see in the throat of the dovetail.
A man that is good with a file is considered an artist in the machining world!
Background music is Dead On
Was destiny. Just happened to come on.
Das sind ja alte Schießprügel.😂
Do I need a drill press for the barrel pins?
No. It’s easy. Kibler sends a guide and the bits.
@@FolkFirearmsCollective yeah I got a different rifle. traditions Kentucky rifle cap and ball. Still good to know thanks appreciate it🙏
If you keep the bits straight and take your time you’ll be fine! Have fun. I’m looking forward to a Kibler Hawken kit supposedly in the works!
@@FolkFirearmsCollective thank you so much man you’ve been he’s been more than a helping hand with that little bit info. I took it to a gunsmith a weak back dude what is so goddamn unhelpful. wanted to charge damn near as much as the rifle kit
@@duncanrumsey5311 you can get the the drill kit from Kibler
Damn wish I saw this before just trying to hammer that shit in. glad I didn’t go full send.
I've always been taught that the cut stroke of the file should be traveling into an edge not away on projects where details matter. Probably isn't a big deal but it prevents bugs from forming and ensures the final product is perfectly clean for the customer
Barrel is still to be draw filed, sanded and finished
Almost
AWESOME. They still actually sell these kits? My state just destroyed our muzzleloader season. Making it an Alternative Firearms Season where you can only use muzzleloaders or straight walled case cartridges now. Like .45-70, .45Long Colt, .44 mag, 357 mag, 450 bushmaster, .350 legend 😢😢
There’s many companies but these Jim Kiblers are top notch. Check them out! You’ll love it. They make a few patterns. You’d do great with a Colonial or Woodsrunner kit. Read up on them, finish it, grab a horn and bag and travel through time my friend.
One of the last full videos on here features a Woodsrunner.
I have a manufactured .50 cal Renegade Caplock by Thompson/Center it is 32 years old now. Have taken excellent care of it and taken many many Whitetail deer with it. Still looks pristine for a used muzzleloader!!@@FolkFirearmsCollective
Jim Kibler mounting same sight: ua-cam.com/video/kK6dsqfXrcg/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
So why not drill and tap for front sight? Just curious considering thats a hefty amount of steel taken off just for a dovetail sight. I feel like over time, the integrity would be lost depending on the caliber and pressures ran through the barrel. I know it is a bull barrel considering its octagonal but more so curious rather than critiquing.
No offense taken, and welcomed inquiry. These are authentic, period correct reproduction rifles. This rifle is based on a Joseph Whitson southern Mountain Carolina rifle of the early 19th century. Believe it or not, the sights don’t move unless seriously struck with a brass punch when done right. The accuracy remains once sighted, for as long as you can load and shoot her right. These sights are authentic to the period and style of rifle.
My dad put me on the moody blues. Such a great band.
All that work for that ugly ass sight!?😢
Woooow, absolute beautiful craftsmanship 👌🏼🔥🔥🔥
Folks having fun with the most fun firearms on earth that still will put meat on the table.
